What AI can’t steal: your personality.

April 20, 2026 · Read ~3 min

We were born human, so we’ve never had to imagine not being one. Strange sentence, right? But I think you know what I mean. In this AI explosion era, so much of what we see is generated. We scroll through social media wondering whether what we’re looking at is real—or made by a machine. We never imagined authenticity could feel this sacred.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m not on the other side of this. I’m genuinely excited about what’s happening right now. I use AI tools to help me build websites, check my grammar, brainstorm ideas. Even while I rely on it, I want to hold onto something in my hand—me.

Which is exactly why, in a world where anything can be generated, being a perfect brand for everyone matters less than being the right brand for someone.

I once worked with a Taiwanese personal skincare brand. The founder was worried about sales and told me she wanted to expand into a wider market segment. We did some research, and what we found surprised her—her real audience wasn’t a broad group of women. It was women who lived a life like hers. Pregnant, raising kids wholeheartedly, craving a little me time. Instead of expanding outward, I suggested she go deeper—build a stronger connection with those moms. (Of course, the sales worry didn’t disappear overnight. So we also launched a second product line targeting a younger generation. Strategy is rarely either/or.)

She didn’t need a wider audience. She needed a deeper one.

What her customers actually love is that she shares the process of being a mom—not only the beautiful parts, but the darkest ones too. She talks about not getting enough sleep after her daughter was born. How impatient she became when her daughter wouldn’t stop crying. You might say AI can generate stories like this now. You’re right, it can. But to make AI produce something that feels alive, you first have to give it a personality to write from. And that personality still has to come from a real person.

AI can replace many jobs, many tasks, even photos. But what it can’t steal is personality. You have to be clear about who you are, and who your people are. Once you have that, AI can take over the execution.

AI can do everything except be you.
